How to Handle Taxiing Winds
Confused about what to do about quartering winds while taxiing?
Just ‘roll’ (i.e. ailerons) and ‘pitch’ (i.e. elevators)
so that the aircraft is aligned with the wind.
Climb into a headwind, dive away from a tailwind.
Amplified Aileron Procedure
The risk is the upwind wing being lifted into the air; so roll to lower that wing:
-
with a quartering headwind this means rolling up into the wind
-
with a quartering tailwind this means rolling down along the wind
Amplified Elevator Procedure
The risk is the tail being lifted into the air; so pitch to lower the tail:
-
with a headwind this means pitching up into the wind
-
with a tailwind this means pitching down along the wind
